    Among the winners, Cepheid [CPHD  Loading...      ()   ] rose sharply after the maker of biological testing systems forecast better-than-expected revenue figures in 2012.

    To the downside, shares of Riverbed Technology [RVBD  Loading...      ()   ] plunged as the networking-equipment provider issued a weak first-quarter outlook.

    S&P's consumer discretionary sector rose to a record high Thursday, as most major averages continued to post strong gains.

    Since the beginning of 2012, the NASDAQ Composite has risen about 8 percent, followed by the S&P 500 and Dow, up 5 and 4.7 percent, respectively.

    The consumer discretionary sector [.GSPD  Loading...      ()   ], which has an index weighting of 11 percent, is up about 6.5 percent this year — the fifth best-performing sector in the S&P [.SPX  Loading...      ()   ].

    By midday Thursday, the sector traded as high as 331.19. The previous record of 330.07 was reached on July 7.

    Utility, material and industrial companies led the gains in the S&P 500 index on Wednesday, after the Federal Reserve [cnbc explains] announced it will keep interest rates near zero in the long-term.

    "The committee decided to keep the target range for the federal funds rate at zero to one four percent, " said Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke at a news conference. 

    "We currently anticipate that economic conditions are likely to warrant exceptionally low levels for the federal funds rate at least until late 2014."

    Utility stocks traded higher after the announcement, as investors sought high-yielding assets.

    Airline stocks rallied Wednesday, after air carriers Delta and US Airways reported better-than-expected quarterly profits.

    In fact, the NYSE Arca Airline Index [.XAL  Loading...      ()   ], a measure of the most highly capitalized companies in the airline industry, is trading at its highest since July 27.

    The index has been soaring this year, up more than 13 percent, after it hit a headwind in 2011, finishing that year down 31 percent.

    Delta Air Lines [DAL  Loading...      ()   ] had a particularly bumpy landing in 2011, ending down 35.8 percent — its worst year ever since going public in 2007.

    Ahead of Tuesday's State of the Union speech, CNBC.com compiled a summary of market performance since President Barack Obama was elected on Nov. 4, 2008, and since he was sworn in on Jan. 20, 2009.

    The NASDAQ Composite [COMP  Loading...      ()   ] posted the largest percent increase among the major equity indices, up 56 percent from the time Obama was elected.

    Midcap stocks are also up significantly, with gains north of 60 percent in the past three years.

    During the period, gold prices rose more than 80 percent, while the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note has dropped from 3.719 in November 2008 to 2.064 today.

    China's Lunar Year or Spring Festival begins today, marking the start of the Year of the Dragon. Will the dragon, a symbol of good fortune in Eastern culture, breathe fire into the stock market in 2012?

    The Chinese New Year is symbolized by a new animal from the zodiac calendar, determined in a 12-year cycle. Last year, for example, was the Year of the Rabbit and 2010 was the Year of the Tiger.

    Since the start of the S&P 500 index in 1928, dragon years have been significantly strong for both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500, with a yearly average gain of 9.65 percent and 7.34 percent, respectively.
